MUZAFFARABAD: Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi has been elected as 13th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir by securing 33 votes. His opponent, joint candidate of PPP and PMLN Chaudhry Latif secured 15 votes only.
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to nominate Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi as candidate for the position of prime minister of Azad Kashmir. This was announced by Ali Amin Gandapur when he reached Muzaffarabad from Islamabad earlier today. Just yesterday, the PTI parliamentary party meeting jointly chaired by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Ali Amin Gandapur and former prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry finalized the name for the slot of AJK premiership.
On Tuesday, the newly elected members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly took oath of their new duties with PTI candidate Anwarul Haq elected as speaker and Riaz Gujjar deputy speaker.
Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry too announced the decision on Twitter.
Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi hails from Abbaspur, Poonch district, and has served as AJK Food Minister in the past. In 2006, he was elected from the platform of Muslim Conference, but just two years back, he joined PTI. He was elected as member of Legislative Assembly from LA-18 Poonch by securing 24,323 votes, beating PMLN’s Ghulam Yasin who could secure 15,769 votes.
